How to enable iPhone 3G data using the World SIM Card

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Note: these instructions were tested using the blacksnow jailbreak / unlock method under firmware 3.1.2 (baseband 05.11.07) and the RoamForce World SIM Card.

Step One
Press the end of a paperclip into the small hole at the top of the iPhone to release the carrier SIM.  Eject it, and replace with your RoamForce SIM card.

Step 2
Enable Wi-Fi and connect to the internet.  You now need to get the APN configuration for the carrier of the country you are currently roaming in. Once connected to Wi-Fi, visit help.benm.at/

Select "Mobile Configs"

Select "Mobile Configs - download"

Select the country you are roaming in...

Step 3
Download the profile, which can be found under “settings”, “general” and “profiles”.  Click on install.

Step 4
Goto “settings”->”general”->”cellular data network” and enter the following settings to connect your RoamForce SIM to the local 3G network.

Step 5
Disable your Wi-Fi connection to connect to the 3G network and that’s all there is to it.  When you return from your trip, simply follow step 1 to swap your carrier SIM back in and it should pick up the original settings automatically.   One annoyance: each time you insert your RoamForce SIM, it doesn’t automatically remember the APN settings, so you may want to use an iphone app like evernote or even the notes application to keep the settings in an easy to remember place so you can copy and paste them when needed.

10 Ways Post-Paid International SIM Cards are Better Than Prepaid.

Post paid international SIM Cards better than pre paid

I am often asked why a post-paid international SIM Card is better than local prepaid.  Well here it is.

1. Only pay for what you use. With post-paid billing you don’t have to pay for wasted airtime vouchers – you’ll never have to purchase $20 of airtime when you only need $3.

2. No call drops due to $0 balance. There is nothing more annoying then being on a call especially a business call and you are cut off because you have run out of credit.

3. No need to track your balance. Post-paid SIM Cards work all the time so you don’t have to worry about tracking your usage.

4. Your phone works upon arrival. When you purchase an International SIM Card, it works upon your arrival.  Hunting around the airport or worse the city you have arrived, looking for a prepaid SIM card can take a lot of time not to mention you can’t make any calls until you find one.

5. Don’t waste time looking for a recharge vendor. Looking for a voucher supplier can be time consuming when trying to top up your pre-paid account.

6. Convenient global coverage. International SIM Cards can have coverage in up to 220 countries, so when traveling to multiple countries only one SIM Card is required.  There is no need to manage multiple SIM Cards.

3. English support. Support can be critical when traveling, and assistance in English even more so.

7. English user guides. See above.

8. English voicemail. Voicemail in a foreign language is virtually useless.  Just try it some time.

9. Blackberry support. If you’re a Blackberry user almost all local prepaid cards worldwide don’t support email.

10. Single contact phone number. One global SIM Card gives the opportunity to have one phone number no matter where you are traveling.

How do I choose an international SIM Card?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

world_SIMThe two major factors when choosing an international SIM Card are quality and price.  And as you can guess, the higher the quality generally the higher the price.  There is no free lunch with International SIM Cards as with just about everything else in this world, however compared to your domestic carrier roaming rates you can generally save 30-80% on roaming, so for most of us it is worth it.

Service Quality

Quality of service varies greatly when purchasing international SIM Cards and can make all the difference when abroad.  This is the “rub” when looking at all the rates; you need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples in quality of service.  SIM Card quality can be segmented into two parts.

1) Carrier International SIM Cards.

The Carrier International SIM Cards are purchased by wholesalers from carriers at discounts based on the ability to drive significant traffic on the network.  The quality of these SIM Cards are excellent and vary little from carrier to carrier as they are well capitalized and have invested the required upfront capital to have the right equipment in place to complete calls.  Carriers compete heavily in domestic markets and quality of service is a top 3 attribute when customers choose their provider and hence they are forced to focus on quality.

2) 3rd Party SIM Cards (Non Carrier).

3rd Party SIM Cards are companies that purchase and maintain a switch and have roaming agreements with the carriers to provide access and service on carrier networks.  In the case of an outgoing call, the traffic goes through the 3rd party’s switch and is then passed to the carrier to be terminated.  The issue here is that often the switches and the connections to the carriers are not robust enough to handle all the traffic volume; they don’t have the required speeds, and / or don’t have redundancy to ensure traffic flow when servers go down.  All of this requires immense amounts of capital which these smaller companies don’t have access to or are not willing to spend. The quality of these providers does not meet that of carrier SIM Cards in my opinion.  At least I have not found one yet that does.  If you do, please let me know as we are always looking to provide the best value products to our customers.

Costs

As Carrier SIM Cards are better quality there is a slightly higher usage cost generally associated with them. Savings of up to 90% can still be realized depending on where you are traveling to.  3rd Party SIM Cards can provide even more savings if you are willing to put up with less than perfect quality. Often these better rates are seen in the form of free incoming minutes for specific countries.

Risks

There are risks as well to consider with 3rd party providers; an additional issue with 3rd party solutions is bankruptcy and major outages. Over the last year 2 of the 6 major suppliers, United Mobile and 09 Mobile have suspended service for months at a time and left hundreds of thousands of roamers without service.  Neither at the time of writing this are providing service.

In the end it really depends on what you are looking for.  Is quality or price more important to you?  My experience when speaking with customers is that they generally buy the cheaper product hoping there is a free lunch. After using it they come to their senses and buy the product that is a little more expensive but something they can rely on when traveling.
